Tower Hill belongs to the Presbyterian Church (USA), a denomination which has approximately 2 million members, and 10,000 congregations nationwide.

Presbyterians trace their history to the 16th century Protestant Reformation and are part of the Reformed tradition. The Reformed tradition celebrates “the Church reformed and always reforming.” In others words, there are always deeper truths to uncover and better ways of living a life of faith. The Reformed tradition affords room for a broad spectrum of people and perspectives under the lordship of Jesus Christ. Tower Hill’s community includes folks who sit on all sides of just about every major political or social issue of our day, are united in the love of Jesus Christ and united in affirming essential Reformed beliefs as follows.

Trinity: We believe that God is three in one: God the Father, Creator; God the Son, Redeemer, Jesus Christ; God the Holy Spirit, Sustainer. God’s very own being includes self-giving, reciprocal love.

Sovereignty of God: We believe that God not only created the world, but rules over the world with grace and justice that is rooted in love. As such, nothing in this world–no power or distance or trauma or sin–can separate us from the love of God.

Justified by Grace through Faith: We believe that all of us are sinners. As such, nothing we do can ever earn our salvation or justify us in the eyes of God. However, in love and mercy, God gives us the free and unmerited gift of grace in God’s Son Jesus Christ, forgiving us of our sins and clothing us in love. In response to this love and grace, we seek to live out our thanks and love of God.

Authority of Scripture: We believe that Jesus Christ is the head of the Church. And because we learn of Christ through the word of God in Scripture both Old and New Testaments of the Bible, Scripture is also the authority of the Church. Thus, no one in the church can claim truth apart from what is revealed in Scripture. We also understand that just as much of God remains a mystery to us, so too does our human ability to interpret the word of God. As a result, there are times when faithful people will interpret Scripture differently and disagree. Still, what unites us in Christ is far superior to the human judgments that differentiate us.

Priesthood of All Believers: As we believe the Church is the body of Christ in the world today, so too we believe that every child of God is called to be a vital minister within the body of Christ. All have equal access to God, as no one, not pastors or church staff or elders or deacons, is superior to anyone else. God has blessed all and each with gifts, and the call to use them for God’s purposes in the world.
