Church World Service Ministries

Blanket Drive and Tools for Hope: Each year Tower Hill joins in a drive to provide blankets and tools to families in need throughout the world. This RAINBOW OF CARING brings warmth and compassion to people who have endured drastic circumstances. The Church World Service is the vehicle we are using to show Tower Hill cares. Will you help? On Mother's Day honor a special woman in your life -- a mother, sister or daughter - or on Father's Day honor a special man in your life -- a father, brother, or son -- by contributing to these worthy programs. Contact Susan Day through the Church Office at 732 747-1348 for any additional information.
CROP Walk: CROP WALK is the community hunger appeal for Church World Service, working to alleviate hunger here at home and around the world. CWS has been designated by our Federal Government to be the official supporter of the faith community coast to coast in times of disaster. Red Bank Crop Walk is the largest all volunteer hunger walk in the country. Members of the staff and congregation support the event each year and would welcome help and participation on Walk Day. Contact Susan Day through the Church Office at 732 747-1348 for any additional information.

Eva M. Russell School and Orphanage in the Dominican Republic:

Since 1995 Tower Hill Church has supported the Eva M. Russell school in Monte Plata, Dominican Republic. This small country Christian school in the central part of the country provides education and meals for very poor street children who cannot afford food, or clothes, or the ability to attend pubic school. All these children would be considered "at risk" in our country. Every child has lost one or both their parents. Each live in homes we would consider primitive. Since Tower Hill has been involved, we have helped the school grow from 30 students to almost 200. Over the last several years we participated in creating their orphanage, which today houses and cares for 30 children. The centerpieces of this mission are our annual mission trips to Monte Plata and the sponsorship that many members of Tower Hill provide for individual children to attend school.

Over the last 10 years our adult trip has led and participated in projects that range from building a kitchen, playgrounds, dental clinic, classrooms and a library. We have recently focused on training and empowering the teachers to work with the challenges of their classrooms. To that end we organize book fairs, teacher training and other classroom participation. The book fairs are particularly important because these children did not have an opportunity to read and never owned a book. The congregation of Tower Hill donates appropriate Spanish language books for each child and for the school library. This ongoing project has fostered a love of reading and learning among the children

During these trips we have met and worked with many wonderful Dominican Christians, and every year our team returns home enriched and hopeful for the children that we reach. We believe that our long term commitment to the school and the tools we provide will help the Dominicans build their faith and empower them to pull themselves and their neighbors up from poverty.

Our high school youth mission trip takes place in November. This trip provides a direct connection between the young people of our church and the children of Dominican Republic. Our Dominican friends tell us that we bring them hope and our teenagers come home with a rich understanding of what it means to be a Christian and an American.

Danita's Children, Haiti:

Danita's Children is a non-profit organization whose mission includes rescuing and caring for orphaned children, and meeting their needs spiritually, physically, academically, and emotionally. It was founded by Danita Estrella in 1999 in Ouanaminthe, Haiti. Tower Hill Church has just recently sponsored this organization, but our Haiti Team has embraced them with all the heart and warmth we can offer. Danita's Children began with a small house and fourteen children, but currently it has 154 orphans living in two homes. It also provides a school to educate nearly 550 children, as well as providing 18,000 meals for children each month. A church and congregation of 500 Haitians provides a place of spiritual hope and worship. Through our Vision program Tower Hill has mad a major contribution to the construction of a medical clinic and hospital for the children.

In March 2010 seven members of THC Haiti Team made a mission journey to Danita's in Ouanaminthe, and the trip was a tremendously rewarding experience. We gave hands-on medical care as well as general help in caring for the children. We assessed new areas where we can support Danita's Children in the future. In addition to further medical projects we are also looking into working with them on sponsorship of their school and teachers, housing, technology, fund raising and staffing.

Tower Hill's Team Haiti is very much looking for new members to help staff and support the work with Danita's. Any interest in participating with Team Haiti can be directed to the team leader, Steve Beard at stevebeard@towerhillchurch.org.

Our Mission to Ghana, West Africa:

Dinah Abbey Mensah is a missionary from Ghana who attended Tower Hill Church while she was studying at the Princeton theological seminary. Our church has supported her mission in Ghana for the last 10 years. Her mission puts a particular focus on helping the women of Ghana and we have helped her by participating in several significant projects.

Presbyterian Women, the Missions Committee, and private donations have provided Dinah with the funds to buy 20 sewing machines. These sewing machines have provided the women of her mission the means to earn a living and send their children to school. They make clothes, bags and hats which they sell in the local markets and we have also had sales of these items at Tower Hill. The women of the Ghana mission have been so successful sewing that they donate their time to make clothes for the poor people from surrounding villages and sew uniforms for the children of the mission.

Many of these women support school age children and the earnings from their sewing has allowed them to educate their children and in some cases return to school themselves to finish their own education. These activities have helped Dinah to spread Christianity, through her mission in a part of the world where ignorance and witchcraft are the enemies of spiritual growth and progress.

If you are interested in learning more about this mission or wish to help please contact Al Sagosz at Tower Hill.
