Hi Bell Parents and Friends,
Shortly after we awoke this morning, it started to rain. Fortunately, it
stopped in time for our 8:30 bus departure. First, we went to the
London Eye,
a 443-ft high ferris wheel with glass enclosed capsules on the River Thames.
About half of us rode the Eye and fit comfortably in one capsule. The 35-minute
ride provided some spectactular views of
London.
Afterwards, we hopped back on the bus for a short trip to
Buckingham Palace
to see the
Changing of the Guard.
We got there an hour early which allowed us to get good front row viewing positions
on the circle in front of the Main Gate. The Changing of the Guard was a one-hour
process involving marching bands, Royal Mounted Police, and (of course) Palace Guards.
There was a special entry into the Palace grounds by the Presidents of New Guinea
and Tonga to meet with the Queen.
After the new guards were in place, we boarded the bus for a trip to
Covent Gardens.
Along the way, we passed a large demonstration on Downing Street protesting
(among other things) African-related issues and the G8 Conference. Fortunately,
we got past the demonstration without incident and disembarked at Covent
Gardens. Covent Gardens is and up-scale "Fanuel Hall" with lots of interesting
boutiques and eating places. We were able to grab a bite to eat and shop
a little.
Then we were off to
Westminster Abbey.
We had an hour to tour the Abbey which is steeped in tradition and history over
the past 900+ years. It was about 4:00 PM when we finished Westminister Abbey,
and we decided that we would like to end the day's activities at
Harrods.
Our bus driver, Richard, dropped us off at Harrods, and we were free to shop,
get some supper, and return to the hotel. We will meet at 10:00 PM
for devotionals.
It has been a long, but memorable day. All are doing well.
Tomorrow, we have a free day until 4:00 when we
will see "Mama Mia" followed by a celebration dinner.
All for now,
George
