2005 Calvin & Chapel Ringers Handbell Tour England

Hi Bell Parents and Friends,
Day 6 was quite a day. We boarded the bus at 8:00 AM for our two-hour
trip to
Salisbury Cathedral.
Once there, we were greeted by Canon David Byford. The Salisbury
Cathedral is probably the finest medieval cathedral in Britain. It has
the tallest spire in Britian of 404 feet. The cathedral was all completed
within one century. The ringers set up for their last concert on the
tour. It was a very special concert which was well attended. The ringers
knew that it was their last concert and Judy's last concert. They rose
to the occasion. They were stupendous! In the audience, there were two
adult handbell groups as well as children from the Cathedral School who
had just returned from a tour in the United States. After the performance,
the children and adult ringers came up to talk with our ringers. Then we
took some pictures of Judy with the Calvin and Chapel groups plus Judy
and the Senior ringers, Kirsten and Stefanie, and Rachel who will be
moving to Boston.
We then had lunch in the town of
Salisbury and hopped on the bus for our trip to
Stonehenge.
Stonehenge is one of the wonders of the prehistoric world. Its great stone
circle stands at the center of an ancient ceremonial landscape containing
over 450 standing burial mounds. Stonehenge evolved over a long period from
about 2950 BC to the complex stone monument at about 1600 BC when it was
abandoned. There are a lot of theories and myths about why Stonehenge was
built and maintained for thousands of years, but it remains an unexplained
mystery.
After Stonehenge, we returned to
London for dinner and devotions.
Tomorrow we have a big day planned including a visit
to the
London Eye,
Buckingham Palace,
Covent Gardens,
Westminster Abbey,
Kensington Palace,
and possibly
Harrods or
Royal Albert Hall.
All for now,
George
